To Whom It May Concern,
We, the undersigned organizations, write in strong opposition to the ongoing gerrymandering efforts in California, Texas, and every other state where parties subvert the will of the electorate for their own political advantage. While the maps proposed in California and Texas, for example, may benefit different political parties, the result is the same: voters lose. They lose their voice, their power, and the foundation of the representative democracy we have been raised to defend.
Gerrymandering is not a partisan problem. It is a voter problem. When politicians manipulate district lines to protect themselves or disadvantage their opponents, the People are left without full representation.
When competitive elections disappear, individual citizens are denied the most basic promise of our democracy, that every vote counts equally.
One party cannot outgerrymander the other in pursuit of a better democracy. This race to the bottom only undermines the legitimacy of representative government itself.
Our message is simple: Gerrymandering Anywhere is a Threat to a Representative Democracy Everywhere.
Protect voters. End gerrymandering, everywhere.
Respectfully,
